I recently received a personal email with several interesting maps. Two were extremely relevant to US animal agriculture because they reinforced why US protein producers need to pay attention to traceability preferences and/or requirement of other countries.
The current world population is 7.6 billion people and each color on the map below represents 1 billion people. North America and Australia combined are home to only 1 billion...export market requirements and preferences are vitally important.
The importance of the southeast Asian markets in particular cannot not be ignored. People will always need protein, but more consumers are demanding food safety and quality assurances. Failing to provide information and transparency will drive consumers from animal protein to plant based and even lab grown protein options as perceived 'safer' options.
North American protein producers have a choice; continue production practices of the past or embrace traceability to compete on the global stage. Companies like PrairiE Systems, Context Network and DP Techlink allow industry stakeholders to implement new strategies, tactics and technologies to take advantage of these global markets.
